Humpback Whales diving for feed in Icy Strait. The wild Inian Islands are every adventurer’s dream of a wilderness escape.  The surrounding unspoiled waters teem with fish and other marine life. You’ll see it all from a guided skiff. This trip includes daily excursions to find humpbacks nearby and to look for killer whales and other whale species who may be transiting the area.  Numerous other species of marine mammals thrive here amidst awe-inspiring backdrops—sea otters, sea lions, and seals to name a few.  You’ll return at night to the comfort of your private guesthouse lodgings and fresh gourmet food prepared from locally sourced and organic ingredients wherever possible.

Kayaking the waters of Southeast AlaskaA wide range of possibilities exist for those interested in paddling the waters near the Hobbit Hole.  In a kayak, floating in glacial blue waters, you’ll enjoy nature’s wonder at “see-level.” From crossings requiring expert skills, to lazy floats along protected bays and inlets (just how lazy depends on the tide’s direction), this package can be customized to each paddler’s ability. We can drop off independent paddlers allowing them to avoid crossing passes with swift currents, or we can guide less experienced boaters. Circumnavigating the largest of the Inian Islands, paddling in Port Althorp, Idaho Inlet or Dundas Bay are a few of the options offered on this package. We provide delicious packed lunches to enjoy afloat or while exploring an inviting beach. As in all our trips, you’ll return at night to the comfort of your private guesthouse lodgings and a fresh gourmet dinner prepared from primarily locally sourced and organic ingredients.

Hiking the alpine of the Pleasant/Lemesurier/Inian Island WildernessOn this hiking-intensive trip, we guide you through the rainforest primeval 1200 feet up to the top of the largest Inian Island, where, on a clear day you can see Brady Glacier and the magnificent Fairweather mountain range to the north, trollers plying Cross Sound to the west and Lemesurier Island and Idaho Inlet to the south and east.  Another day we are dropped off on George Islands for an exploration of a WWII gun emplacement and remnants of the military installation there. Whales can frequently be seen and heard while on this walk. Other hiking options include low-tide beach walks, tide-pooling, and cross-island walks to discover muskegs and berry patches.  We’ll pack a picnic to share along the way.  Later we retire to the Hobbit Hole to warm up in your cozy cabin or cool down on the lawn before dinner.  All meals are freshly prepared from locally sourced organic ingredients wherever possible.

Testimonials from our Guests

"Sunny and hot, lush and green (is this really SE Alaska?)... Thank you Jane for wonderful adventures here at the Hobbit Hole.  Hiking, fishing, and adventures in the fog--wicked fun.  Love the gardens, domestic animals and the very comfy guesthouse.  Thanks for making us feel so at home.  --Don &  Debra, VT"la-perouse-pacific-ocean-sunset
kayakers in Cross Sound"We blew through the gut into the Hobbit Hole, not having a clue what was back here—maybe lunch, maybe the edge of the earth—all I knew was my wife was wet and cold, and there was no way we were backing out of the channel that led into the Hobbit Hole until the next slack tide. Imagine how blessed we must feel to be sitting in a warm, tidy house, woodstove going, clothes drying out—even a pair of slippers on my feet! We ate our lunch in the dry, and found interesting conversation and a glimpse of a lifestyle that most of us find as totally foreign as the dark side of the moon. I"ll never forget the garden, poppies, and funny brown ducks marching soldierly single file down the path to wherever ducks go. We are blessed to be given eyes to drink this all in, nose to smell the delight of a dry, crisp cabin, and feet to warm in front of a wood fire. Thanks, Tony and Lori Juneau, Alaska"
Boys fishing in Mud bay"We knew what we wanted, and without knowing, we ended up at the Hobbit Hole.  Proving, yet again, that if you let the universe know what you want, perfection can happen!  ...thank you so very much for sharing your world with us.  I am enthralled with your coastal life, plan to return some day, and will tell others what we have experienced while spending time at your place.  --Stephen, Yukon Territory, Canada"

Breaching Humpback Whale Picture"What can I say at the end of my second visit but that I am now more sure than ever that the Hobbit Hole is, in fact, one of the best few places on this or any other nearby planet? So many unusual things this visit:  sunbathing in SE Alaska, three days of clear-ish skies, whales just about in the skiff...  thanks again for three most relaxing days at this home away from home--you're not really helping me kick my Alaska addiction (the cookies alone are enough to bring me back...I know, I know, the first taste was free and all...) but some things you learn to live with--amazing rest, food, scenery, and most of all, company--can't wait until next time... --Bill, CA

“…The memories are with us forever. Couldn’t think of a better way to start out this trip. I hope not, but the rest of this trip will pale in comparison to all the two of you have shown us. I know it’s every day for all of you, but the bears, whales, seals, otters, eagles and fish combined in the scenery for an extremely impressionable four days.” Lars & Linda, St. Maries, ID

Brown Bear Viewing in Southeast Alaska on Chichagof Island.

Freshly caught, wild, sockeye salmon from the waters of Southeast Alaska."Alaska by the sea--great salty air to take in--good for the soul.  So many aspects of our stay here bring back memories of Maine during my childhood--before our old haunts became more heavily populated.  Thanks for bringing my Grandfather's stories back--boating and fishing with him...  The simple living with respect to the land and sea and creatures we share it with is reassuring to witness and share if only for a few days.  It calms my soul just knowing there are folks out here being such respectful caretakers of this corner of the earth.  This is a chord that runs deep in me and the joy of feeling it strung again is complete.  These islands are in good hands.  The love is easy to feel!  Thinking of you all up here will bring a smile to my face--thank you for sharing your way of being with/in the world.  Perhaps our soft footsteps will cross again.  All the best to you in this beautiful space,  --Leslie, CA"

"Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!  Such wonderful hosts, in a location that words can't describe.  If the guesthouse is part of a "wilderness" experience, I could live like this forever.  You're both so gracious and so caring.  This is truly one lifetime experience I will always remember--even in my mature years.  --Stan, OR"

“Thanks to Lindy we found this wonderful spot and got to hang out with the whales in the channel and ate gourmet food in droves. As Cecily says “the silence here is loud.” We hiked with the amazing cat/dog duo of Pearl and Hector. We got chased by the sea lions, ate the best fish ever and got a real sense of a place in the wilderness. Thanks for your hospitality, we hope to come back and visit again.” Bill, Cecily, Chris & Katie, RI & MA

"If you took away the eight million people and all of their crap, leaving only the best few, some cozy houses and a few boats and replanted some trees, New York would be a lot like this place.  I'd ask you to come visit, but honestly: eight million people and all of their crap...  So and besides, I'm going to move in to the old boat on the shore.  Hope you don't mind.  See you around.  --Becket, formerly of NYC"

"Every thoughtful detail you have put into making the Hobbit Hole a place where our family could knit itself even more closely together--we've been thankful for all of them.  It feels a bit more like friendship than "host-ship," and we hope this isn't the last time our paths meet.  --Barbe, CA"
